I saw a
story today on great train rides, and one of the recommended rides was one that we went on last year. Part of our vacation included a stop in Durango, Colorado, to ride the historic train to Silverton. Talk about breathtaking views! The train follows the Animas River, climbing to over 9,000 feet in elevation to reach Silverton, an old mining town. I thought I would post some pics here.

This is the steam engine that pulled us. All the D&S NGRR steam engines are circa 1923-25. This shot was taken in Silverton before our return trip to Durango. |

A shot of the black coal steam as we made our way around a bend in the tracks. |
|
As the train climbs higher, there are beautiful views of the Animas River. |
|
At some points in the journey, rock outcroppings practically touch both sides of the train. |
|
Another shot of the Animas, with the beautiful blue color coming from the minerals of the mine in Silverton. |

A waterfall above the train. |
The cars of the train are vintage just like the steam engine. You can opt to ride the train up and down the canyon, or you can ride a bus one way. We rode the train both ways. For more information, see the
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad website.
